About Tiber Construction
Tiber Construction was established in 1951. It has grown from a local contractor into a major private-sector builder. The head office is in Kramerville, Sandton, and there is also an office in Cape Town. Many of its staff are permanent employees, and the company says its people stay for 18 years on average.
The firm builds commercial, residential and industrial projects. Recent examples include a R310 million residential development on Webber Road and the renovation of a hotel in Melrose. It owns its own tower cranes and access platforms, and it holds a Level 3 B-BBEE rating. It also reports many first-place finishes at the Master Builders safety awards since 2012.
How Tiber supports students
Construction firms struggle to find enough qualified engineers and site managers. Tiber answers this problem by growing its own talent through the Tiber Construction Bursary. The fund supports full-time study in civil engineering, structural engineering, building science and construction management.
The award is intended for students who have already completed at least their first year of study. As a result, funding normally starts in second year. Published information says the bursary pays tuition fees, examination fees, prescribed books, residence and a monthly stipend. That covers most of the main costs a student faces.
Tiber has previously reported that 24 bursars qualified and now work within the group. Treat that as a past figure, since totals change over time.
The bursary also gives students a head start in the industry. Contractors value young people who already understand sites, safety and project teams. A bursar who joins the company after graduating is therefore not starting from zero. This is especially useful in a sector where practical experience counts for a great deal.
What to know before applying
Applicants must be South African citizens with a Matric certificate. You should study full-time at a recognised South African institution and hold a minimum result of 60%. You submit a copy of your ID and copies of your academic records. These can be handed in at the Kramerville office or sent by email.
Shortlisted students are invited to an interview. Bring the original ID and academic records with you. After graduation, bursars are required to join Tiber Construction. This is a real work-back commitment, so think carefully about it before you accept the award.
Closing dates and benefits can change from year to year. Bursary details are not prominent on the company website, so contact Tiber directly to confirm the current process and the length of any service period.
