About Tronox

Tronox is a global mining and chemicals company. It is the largest fully integrated producer of titanium dioxide pigment, the ingredient that gives paint, plastic and paper their brightness and opacity. The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange, and its head office is in Stamford, Connecticut, in the United States. Its mineral sands operations stretch across several continents.

In South Africa, Tronox runs two mineral sands operations. Namakwa Sands sits on the West Coast, with a mine at Brand-se-Baai and a smelter and mineral separation plant at Saldanha Bay. KZN Sands works around Empangeni and Mtunzini in KwaZulu-Natal. Together they turn heavy minerals into titanium feedstock, zircon, rutile and high-purity iron.

How Tronox supports students

Tronox funds a bursary programme to build the skills its plants and mines need. Recent notices describe separate intakes for KZN Sands and for Namakwa Sands, and the fields change between them. The Namakwa Sands advert listed several engineering streams (mechanical, electrical, mining, chemical and process control), as well as environmental science, mine survey, extraction metallurgy, geology and information technology. The funding goes beyond tuition. The Namakwa Sands advert mentioned accommodation, meals, a living allowance, books and a one-off laptop allowance. The KZN Sands notice was aimed at top-performing students entering first year at a university or university of technology. Exact benefits differ from year to year, so read each advert closely.

What to know before applying

Local ties count. Namakwa Sands gives preference to applicants from the communities around its sites in the Saldanha Bay and Matzikama municipalities. KZN Sands applicants were asked for proof of residence from a traditional council. Applicants must also be South African citizens.

Why does a mining company fund students at all? Mineral sands operations need metallurgists, process engineers, geologists and IT specialists, and these skills are scarce in rural areas. Funding local students is a practical way to fill those roles. It also supports the communities that live beside the mines. The KZN Sands notice asked for certified documents that were not older than three months, so get your copies stamped close to the closing date.

Academic requirements are firm. The Namakwa Sands advert asked for 65% in Mathematics, Physical Science and English, plus a 60% overall average. You would also need a cover letter, a CV, a certified ID copy, your matric certificate, recent results and proof of acceptance or registration. Tronox states that successful candidates should be willing to work at any of its business unit operations once they finish studying.

Closing dates differ by site and have fallen in March and September in recent years. Applications are handled through the Tronox careers portal. Always confirm the current dates and fields on the official Tronox website before you apply.
