About the University of the Free State

The University of the Free State, or UFS, is a public university based in Bloemfontein. It also has a campus in Qwaqwa and a South Campus. UFS is one of the older universities in South Africa. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through faculties such as Humanities, Economic and Management Sciences, Law, Health Sciences, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Education, and Theology and Religion.

Many students rely on financial help to study there. As well as standard bursaries and NSFAS, the university runs competitions that reward top learners with prizes and study opportunities.

How UFS supports students

Two of these programmes appear on this page: the Matriculant of the Year Competition and the Star of Stars Competition. Both aim to find talented, well-rounded Grade 12 learners. The university judges more than marks. In past editions, it has looked at academic performance, leadership and community involvement.

Finalists receive more than a certificate. Past versions of the competition offered prize money, personal development and public recognition. Winners and special-award finalists were announced at a formal gala dinner. These events give learners exposure, networking and a reason to apply to UFS.

For the university, the benefit is clear. It attracts strong first-year students early. As a result, the competitions work as both a scholarship opportunity for learners and a recruitment tool for UFS.

What to know before applying

Entry rules change between years, so always read the latest entry form on the UFS website. In earlier editions of Star of Stars, entrants were learners living in the Free State. The top 20 finalists then needed to reach a minimum admission point score of 34 in their final matric exams. The top 10 had to sign an agreement to study at UFS.

That last point matters. If you win or reach the final stage, you may be committing to the university. Make sure UFS offers your chosen course before you enter. Confirm what the prize covers too, because prizes can differ from year to year.

The closing date usually falls during the Grade 12 year, well before final exams. Therefore, you should ask your school to help with reference letters, proof of leadership roles and records of community work. Strong evidence of service often matters as much as marks.
