University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is a public research university formed in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville, with campuses across Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the wider province. Beyond teaching and research, UKZN's Student Funding division administers a wide range of financial support for its own students, combining National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding, university loan funding, and bursaries and scholarships sourced from corporate donors, deceased estates and the university's own funds — including named awards such as the Pius Langa Scholarship for top matriculants and the Frene Ginwala Scholarship for top-performing African women entrants.

UKZN channels this support because access to higher education for financially needy and academically capable students is a core part of its institutional mission, particularly given the university's roots in two institutions that served very different communities under apartheid. Bursaries administered through Student Funding are generally awarded to returning undergraduates who paid their previous year's fees in full and achieved an average above 64.5%, where gross family income does not exceed R600,000 a year. As these are need-based and merit-based institutional awards rather than employer-sponsored ones, they carry no work-back or employment obligation — a bursary, as UKZN's own funding pages state, is a gift that does not have to be repaid.
