Vaal Central Water is a national water board, set up under the Water Services Act 108 of 1997. It is a Schedule 3B national public entity that supplies bulk water to the Free State and the Northern Cape. Its customers include municipalities, mines and solar power plants.

The board manages dams, pipelines and treatment works. It must also meet national water-quality standards. That work needs engineers, scientists and technicians, so the entity funds students who want to join the sector.

How Vaal Central Water supports students

The board awards 20 full-time bursaries a year. They cover undergraduate study in water and environmental fields. Recent fields include chemical engineering with a water focus, civil engineering with a water infrastructure focus, environmental engineering, environmental science, hydrology, mechanical engineering, water management, and water treatment and waste management. Cyber security has also been included, because modern water systems depend on secure technology.

Funding pays for tuition, prescribed textbooks, accommodation or residence costs and a living allowance. The bursary is awarded for one academic year at a time. Renewal depends on satisfactory academic performance, so you must keep passing.

The organisation says it also wants to transform the technical professions. It aims to build scarce and critical skills for the water sector, particularly among young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Recipients may do vacation work, work-integrated learning or job shadowing during their studies.

What to know before applying

Applicants must be South African citizens, usually aged 18 to 25. You need an NSC matric with at least 60% for Mathematics and Physical Science. Some calls also set minimum admission point scores for each qualification, and you must study full-time at an accredited South African institution. You should come from a disadvantaged background and must not hold another bursary.

Applications go through the online portal named in the current call. Prepare certified copies of your ID and matric certificate, proof of registration, proof of residence, evidence of parental income and a motivational letter. The most recent call closed in early 2026, after an extension, and dates differ every year.

A work-back period of two years applies. After you graduate, you are expected to work for Vaal Central Water for two years as a condition of the funding. This provides a job pathway in a sector with few qualified people. However, it also means you commit to the board, so consider this carefully.
