About W&RSETA

W&RSETA is the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority. It is one of the sector education and training authorities set up under the Skills Development Act of 1998, and it was established in 2000. The head office is in Centurion. Its job is to improve skills in the wholesale and retail sector through learning programmes, grants and the monitoring of education and training.

Retail is one of the biggest employers in the country. Shops, supermarkets, hardware stores and distribution centres all depend on trained people. Therefore, W&RSETA funds a mix of learnerships, skills programmes, internships and bursaries. It also offers management programmes for people already working in the sector.

How W&RSETA supports students

The W&RSETA bursary scheme started in 2011. Its goal is to help students complete qualifications that match the sector's skills needs. Earlier rounds funded unemployed students at both TVET colleges and higher education institutions, and the numbers ran into the thousands.

Fields have included retail business management, supply chain management, logistics, accounting, financial management, marketing and sales. Other qualifying areas were information technology, food technology, hospitality, human resources and management assistant studies. Funding has covered tuition, prescribed books and, where relevant, meals and accommodation.

Learnerships work differently. Employers apply for the funding and then recruit the learners, so candidates usually apply through a company rather than through the SETA.

Retail careers are wider than many people expect. Supply chain, logistics, accounting, information technology and food technology all feed into the sector. A student who studies one of these subjects can work in head offices, warehouses, distribution networks or stores. As a result, the funded fields offer real choices after graduation. Management programmes, such as the Retail Management Development Programme, also exist for people who already work in the sector.

What to know before applying

Pay close attention to how a bursary round works, because it changes. In the 2026 round, for example, the scheme was open to students who had been funded by W&RSETA the year before and who were moving up to the next level. These students needed to have passed at least 60% of their previous modules. Students did not apply directly. Instead, the institution's financial aid office submitted the applications, and the institutional deadline was 30 May 2026.

Earlier rounds allowed direct applications. Applicants had to be South African citizens, accepted at or registered with a recognised institution, and without other funding. The usual documents were a certified ID copy, matric certificate, academic records, proof of registration and proof of household income.

Because the rules differ by round, check the official W&RSETA website and speak to your institution's financial aid office. They can tell you whether new students are being funded this year.
