WSP

WSP is a global engineering and professional-services firm with a substantial South African presence, including offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, providing consulting services across infrastructure, transportation, environment, energy, and building design. In South Africa, WSP works on major public and private infrastructure projects, drawing on the same international technical standards and project experience the firm applies across its global network.

WSP funds bursaries in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering for students who have maintained at least a 65% academic average and are entering their second, third, or final year of study at a recognised South African university, because professional-services engineering firms compete directly with each other, with parastatals, and with mining and construction companies for a limited national pool of qualified engineers. Building relationships with strong students years before they graduate is, for a firm like WSP, a more reliable way to secure talent than competing solely in the open graduate market. The bursary covers tuition fees and contributes toward study materials and living costs.

Recipients are given vacation work and internship opportunities during their studies, creating a genuine pathway toward graduate employment at WSP. However, this pathway is explicitly described as being subject to performance and business need rather than guaranteed, and publicly available information does not describe a fixed, binding work-back period -- successful bursars are strongly positioned for a graduate role, but are not contractually obligated to accept one, nor is WSP contractually bound to offer one.
