Mangosuthu University of Technology, known as MUT, is a university of technology in Umlazi, south of Durban. It opened in 1979 with just 15 students and now has about 14,500. First-year students apply through the Central Applications Office, and MUT gives preference to applicants who make it their first choice.
About MUT
MUT opened in 1979 as a technikon serving the Durban area, and it grew steadily over the following decades. In November 2007, it became Mangosuthu University of Technology, in line with the national change from technikons to universities of technology. As a university of technology, it focuses on career-oriented qualifications.
Faculties
MUT teaches through three faculties: Applied and Health Sciences; Engineering; and Management Sciences. Within these faculties, it offers diplomas and degrees in the sciences, health, engineering and business. Many of them include practical training in a workplace.
Applying to MUT
All first-year applications go through the Central Applications Office, or CAO. MUT's pages describe applications opening in January and closing on 30 September, with late applications accepted until 30 November. However, these dates can change, so confirm them on the CAO website for your intake.
MUT also has a second-semester intake for some programmes, including engineering and analytical chemistry, with a closing date of 31 May. When it selects students, MUT prefers applicants who meet the requirements for a programme and who list MUT as their first choice. So rank it first if it is where you most want to study.
Fees and funding
Tuition depends on your programme. Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS, and the KwaZulu-Natal government, municipalities and companies also fund students in engineering and the sciences. Browse our bursaries to find funding that covers MUT.
Is MUT right for you?
MUT suits students in the Durban area who want a practical qualification in engineering, the sciences or business. Its mid-year intake for some programmes also gives a second chance to start studying within the same year.
Because the CAO lets you list several institutions on one form, you can include MUT alongside other KwaZulu-Natal universities. Just remember that putting MUT first can improve your chances there.
Before you apply to MUT
Check the entry requirements for your programme in MUT's prospectus, and decide whether you want the main intake or the mid-year intake. Then list MUT as your first CAO choice if it is where you most want to study, since that can improve your chances. Keep your CAO reference number, and watch for any request for documents after you apply.
