North-West University (NWU)

North-West University, known as the NWU, is a large multi-campus university with sites in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark. It was formed on 1 January 2004 through a merger, and it now enrols tens of thousands of contact and distance students. Its campuses lie in two provinces, so students in the North West and southern Gauteng can choose a site near home.

About the NWU

The NWU brought together the former University of North-West and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. It also took in the Sebokeng campus of Vista University. The university describes the merger as one of the most successful and stable in South African higher education.

Enrolment has grown strongly since then. The university's corporate profile reports growth of about 45% between 2004 and 2024, to more than 58,000 students.

Faculties and campuses

The NWU teaches through eight faculties, and most of them serve both contact and distance students. Its three campuses are in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark, and each one has its own residences. For example, the Mahikeng campus has 16 residences on its grounds.

Applying to the NWU

The NWU splits its closing dates by programme type. For the 2027 intake, selection programmes closed on 30 June 2026, while general programmes and residence applications closed on 31 August 2026. Postgraduate applications were due to close on 30 November 2026.

Places are limited. The university said that it could accommodate 11,900 first-year students in 2027. The administration fee is R150 for South African applicants and R600 for international applicants, and you can only pay it online. The NWU credits this fee to your student account if you are admitted.

Fees and funding

Tuition depends on your programme and campus, and the university publishes its fee rules each year. Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS. Many companies also fund NWU students, particularly in engineering, the sciences and commerce. Browse our bursaries to find funding that covers your course.

Is the NWU right for you?

The NWU suits students who want a residential campus outside the big metros, or who prefer distance study. Since selection programmes close in June, apply early if you are aiming for one of them.

Before you apply to the NWU

Decide which campus you want before you apply, because programmes and residences differ between Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark. Then check the admission requirements for your qualification, and note whether it is a selection programme with the earlier June deadline. Pay the administration fee online when you apply, since the university only processes complete applications. Finally, keep an eye on your email, because the NWU sends outcomes and requests for documents that way.
