Rhodes University is a small residential university in Makhanda, in the Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1904 and has just over 8,200 students, which makes it one of the smallest public universities in South Africa. That size shapes its character, because classes are smaller and staff are easier to reach.
About Rhodes University
The university has taught students in Makhanda, formerly Grahamstown, since 1904. It describes itself as having among the best undergraduate pass and graduation rates in South Africa, along with strong postgraduate success rates. It also claims the best research output per academic staff member and the most favourable staff-to-student ratio among South African universities.
Rhodes has an international mix for its size. About 30% of its students are postgraduates, and more than 18% come from 54 countries outside South Africa, according to the university.
Faculties
Rhodes teaches through six faculties: Humanities, Science, Commerce, Pharmacy, Law and Education. Its journalism and media programmes are well known, and Makhanda itself hosts the National Arts Festival each year. Most students live in residence, so campus life is close-knit.
Applying to Rhodes University
You apply online through ROSS, the university's student portal, after you register as a user. A paper form is also available if you cannot apply online. The non-refundable application fee is R100, and you pay it after you submit your form.
Rhodes has long used 30 September as the closing date for new students, and that date also applies to foreign applicants. The university says that it may consider late applications from South Africans, but not from foreign students after 30 September. Check the current admissions page to confirm the date for your intake.
Fees and funding
Rhodes publishes its fees each year, and residence makes up a large share of the cost because most students live on campus. Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS. For undergraduate financial aid, the university lists 046 603 8248, while fee questions go to 046 603 8743. Browse our bursaries for more funding options.
