You apply to Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) online, and the application fee is R300, which is not refundable. Applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 April 2026. Undergraduate applications closed on Friday, 31 July 2026, and postgraduate applications on Monday, 31 August 2026.
No late applications
SMU does not accept late applications or walk-ins, because it receives a high number of applications for every programme. After the closing date, the system does not let you submit an application.
Step 1: Choose two programmes
You can apply for a maximum of two study choices. The first one you select counts as your first choice, and SMU gives priority to first-choice applications. Check the APS and subjects you need on the SMU admission requirements page.
Step 2: Apply online
Complete the online application, and enter your names exactly as they appear on your ID or passport. Select your qualification code and name from the list in the application. If you need accommodation, choose the residence option on the application form.
Step 3: Upload your documents
Upload certified, individually scanned copies of:
- Your ID or passport, which is compulsory
- Your Grade 11 end-of-year results, if you are in Grade 12, or your National Senior Certificate or IEB certificate if you have finished school
- Your degree certificates and academic record, if you studied at a university before
- Your marriage certificate, if applicable
- Proof of payment of the R300 application fee
Use your ID number as the reference when you pay the fee. SMU does not process applications without all the required documents. If you do not submit them within two months, it does not consider your application.
Undergraduate and postgraduate
If you apply for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, you apply for each separately, with its own documents, but you pay only one application fee.
Selection and offers
For Grade 12 learners, SMU makes pre-selections using Grade 11 results and final selections after the matric results are released in January. In 2026, final selections took place from 14 to 16 January. Admitted applicants had to register within three days of accepting their offer, or lose their place.
Registration
In 2026, first-time entering students registered online through the iEnabler self-help portal from 21 to 30 January, using their own laptops or smartphones. Orientation for first-year students followed from 27 to 30 January at the University Sports Complex.
Residence
SMU has limited places in its residences, and being admitted does not guarantee you a room. Places are awarded on a first come, first served basis.
