Applying to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is free, and you can do it online or on paper. You may choose two study programmes in each application year. For the 2027 intake, applications opened on 1 April 2026 and closed at 12:00 on 31 October 2026. Here is how the process works.
Before you apply
First, check the admission requirements for your two choices in UJ's undergraduate prospectus. Make sure that your Admission Point Score and subject levels meet the minimums. Then rank your choices carefully, because UJ does not change, modify or cancel your choices once it has processed your application.
Also gather your documents. You will need a certified copy of your ID and your latest school results. If you studied at another institution before, you must declare those studies and submit an official academic record, even if you did not finish.
Applying online
- Go to the UJ website and select Apply.
- Create your application, or log in if you already have a UJ student number.
- Choose your two study programmes.
- Upload your documents and submit the application.
If you applied before and already have a student number, call the UJ Call Centre on 011 559 4555 to check that your cell number and email address are up to date. UJ sends a PIN to these details so that you can finish your application.
Applying on paper
You can also submit a paper application at any of UJ's four campuses: Auckland Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein and Soweto. Choose your two programmes, complete the form and hand it in. UJ asks paper applicants to allow three weeks before they check the status of their application.
Residence applications
If you need a place in a UJ residence, apply for it as well. For 2027, residence applications closed on the same day as study applications, 31 October 2026. Places are limited, so apply early.
After you apply
UJ sends all official communication by email, so use an address that you check often. You can also check your application status on the UJ website with your ID number or student number. If your application meets the requirements and there is space in your programme, UJ will tell you whether you have been accepted. Keep your student number safe, because you will use it to track your application and, later, to register.
Watch out for fraud
Because applying to UJ is free, nobody should ask you for money to process your application. UJ asks students to report fraud to its hotline on 0800 872 846 or by email to uj@thehotline.co.za.
