Fees at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) depend on your programme, your modules and whether you live in a residence. UNIZULU shows the breakdown of your fees on your student account. The payment rules below come from UNIZULU's registration pages, its 2026 registration FAQs and its student fee guide.
What tuition covers
According to UNIZULU's student fee guide, tuition fees include laboratory fees, examination fees (but not re-examination fees), library subscriptions, student facilities and personal accident insurance. Prescribed textbooks are not part of tuition, so budget for them separately.
The registration deposit
- NSFAS and bursary-funded students: do not pay a minimum initial payment, but must send their original sponsor letter so that UNIZULU can verify the sponsorship
- Self-funded students: pay a deposit of 50% of the residence amount once UNIZULU accepts them into an available residence
Paying a residence deposit does not mean you will be allocated a room. UNIZULU has a limited number of bed spaces, so students who do not get a room must find accommodation elsewhere.
Students with debt
If you owe fees from an earlier year, you can apply for a payment plan. If your debt is below R10,000, you may register once you complete the payment plan. If it is above R10,000, you must settle 50% or reduce the debt to R10,000, and then complete a payment plan before registering. Final-year students with up to two outstanding modules may also apply for a payment plan.
How to pay
- ABSA bank deposit, which clears in 24 hours
- Debit or credit card at the Student Accounts Office, which clears immediately
- EFT, which clears in 24 hours
- Online payment through the Student iEnabler portal
UNIZULU does not accept cash. Use your student number as the only reference, and use the official account details on UNIZULU's website. Sponsors use a separate account.
Checking your balance
You can check your fee balance by sending an SMS to 34763 in the format "UZ [student number] B", by emailing your student number with "FEE ENQUIRY" in the subject line to fees@unizulu.ac.za, or online through iEnabler.
Refunds
The fee guide says that UNIZULU is not obliged to grant a refund, but it may do so. The refund is the amount paid less the amount billed, and you need the official refund form, a bank statement and your latest fee statement.
Funding your studies
Check your NSFAS status on the NSFAS portal, and appeal there if NSFAS rejects your application. Browse our bursaries, or read the University of Zululand overview.
