UP Admission Requirements

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Every undergraduate programme at the University of Pretoria (UP) is number-limited, so admission depends on your Admission Point Score (APS) and your marks in key subjects. The figures below come from UP's official application requirements tables for 2027. Use them to see which programmes your results can reach, and remember that meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.

How UP uses your results

If you are in Grade 12, UP considers you on your final Grade 11 results. If you have already finished school, it uses your final National Senior Certificate results. Your final admission is then updated once your Grade 12 results come out, so you must keep your marks up. UP leaves Life Orientation out of the APS, and it decided not to use the National Benchmark Test for undergraduate admission.

Minimum APS for popular UP programmes

  • BCom Accounting Sciences: APS 34, with English at level 5 and Mathematics at level 6
  • BCom (three-year programme): APS 30, with Mathematics at level 4
  • BCom Investment Management: APS 34, with Mathematics at level 6
  • BCom Economics or Financial Management Sciences: APS 32
  • LLB: APS 35, with English at level 6
  • BEng (all disciplines): APS 35, with Mathematics and Physical Sciences at level 6
  • BSc Computer Science: APS 30, with Mathematics at level 6
  • MBChB (Medicine): APS 35, with Mathematics at level 6 and Physical Sciences at level 5
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery: APS 35
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science: APS 35
  • Bachelor of Nursing Science: APS 28, with Life Sciences
  • BEd (all phases): APS 28
  • Bachelor of Arts: APS 30
  • BCom Statistics and Data Science or BCom Law: APS 32
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Diagnostic Radiography: APS 30
  • BSc Architecture: APS 30
  • Bachelor of Information Science: APS 28

Most of these programmes also ask for English at level 4 or 5, so check the language requirement as well as the APS.

Selection programmes

Some programmes are selection programmes, which means that UP applies extra criteria on top of the APS. These include all the health sciences degrees, such as medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and radiography, as well as architecture, veterinary science and the four-year BCom. So for these programmes, a strong APS is only the first step.

Extended routes

If your marks fall a little short, UP offers some longer routes. For example, the five-year Bachelor of Engineering, previously called ENGAGE, includes foundation modules in its first year. It asks for 65% in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, with an APS of 33. Similarly, the four-year BCom accepts an APS of 26.

Closing dates

For the 2027 intake, Veterinary Science closed on 31 May 2026, and all other undergraduate programmes closed on 30 June 2026. Since UP uses your Grade 11 results, apply as early as possible in your matric year.
