About Arup Education Trust Bursary

The Arup Education Trust Bursary helps South African students who study degrees in the built environment. The Arup Education Trust funds students from designated groups whose households earn less than R30,000 a month.

The trust's website said when we checked on 6 November 2026 that applications for the 2025 academic year were closed. It asked visitors to return to see when applications reopen. So there is no open call now, but the criteria below show what to prepare.

Funding Details

The trust's criteria page explains who qualifies but does not list the amounts it pays. Ask the trust what an award covers before you rely on it. The page also does not mention a work-back period, so read any agreement carefully.

The trust accepts documents as PDF files under 2MB, which makes the process simple if you scan your papers in advance.

Since the trust has no open call at present, use the time to prepare. Scan your ID, matric certificate, transcript and tuition statement as PDF files under 2MB, and keep them in one folder. When applications reopen, you can then apply on the first day instead of searching for documents.

Where You Can Study

The trust's criteria page does not name particular universities. You need a place on a built environment degree, and your documents include a university transcript and a tuition statement. Ask the trust if your institution is not a public university.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply

You can apply if you are a South African citizen from a designated group, as defined by B-BBEE. That covers Black African, Coloured and Indian or Asian students, and students with disabilities. You must also be studying a built environment degree, or about to start one. First-year students are welcome.

The trust uses a household income test. Your combined household income must be under R30,000 a month, so collect proof of what everyone in your household earns.

Built environment degrees include the following fields.

  • Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Construction studies
  • Quantity surveying
  • Town planning

The trust funds the built environment broadly, so students outside civil engineering can apply too. If you study architecture, quantity surveying or town planning, say so clearly in your application. The household income limit counts everyone's earnings together, so collect payslips, grant letters or a letter from an employer for each earner well before the form reopens.

Application Procedure

Applications reopen on the trust's website, so check the application criteria page regularly. For questions, call the trust on +27 11 218 7600 or email aet.enquiries@arup.com. The office is at 5 Parks Boulevard, Oxford Parks, Dunkeld, Rosebank, Johannesburg.
