About Babette Taute Scholarship
The Babette Taute Scholarship pays R50,000 towards a full-time Honours year in English at a South African university. The Babette Taute Trust funds it from a major bequest by the late Babette Taute. Applications for 2027 close on 20 November 2026.
Few funders in South Africa back the study of language and literature in this way. So if you love English and plan to continue after your first degree, this award deserves your time.
Funding Details
Each scholarship is worth R50,000, and the trust offers a number of them each year. The money is a contribution to your Honours year, so check how it fits with your fees and living costs.
You can hold other awards at the same time, but your total must not exceed R120,000. If it does, the trust may reduce its own award. You must also tell the trustees at once if you receive further funding after they select you.
The official call does not mention a work-back. Because the award rewards merit in a field of study, it does not appear to tie you to an employer, but read any award letter carefully.
Where You Can Study
You can study at any South African university. The scholarship reaches you through the university where you will study, so the form asks for its name and your new student number if you have one. The University of the Western Cape has published the 2027 call for its students, but the award is not limited to that campus.
You should also apply for your Honours place at the same time.

Any branch of English language and literature qualifies, and this includes applied language studies. You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident, and you must study full-time so that you finish the degree in one year.
The trustees award the scholarship on merit, and they read that word broadly. A fine academic record comes first. However, they may also consider leadership in cultural or social areas, the quality of your writing and publications, and excellence as a teacher of English or as a translator.
The form asks you to explain in up to 100 words how your Honours course fits the focus on English. Therefore, be specific about your course and your interests rather than repeating your CV.
Application Procedure
Download the form from the University of the Western Cape announcement. Email it to Ms Lauren Smidt at lauren.smidt@sanlamtrust.co.za, and copy naaznien.parker@sanlamtrust.co.za. Use the subject line "Babette Taute 2027 Application/Query: (Surname of Author)", because the form warns that other subject lines will not be processed. Your referees must also submit confidential references by 20 November 2026.
