About FoodBev SETA Bursary
The FoodBev SETA Bursary supports study and research that serve South Africa's food and beverage manufacturing sector. FoodBev SETA offers Master's and PhD awards, Food Science and Food Technology awards, and other bursaries that it updates each year. Its most recent discretionary grant window closed on 7 August 2026.
This bursary works differently from most, because students must not apply to the SETA directly. Your university applies on your behalf, so begin with its bursary office.
Funding Details
The student page does not state an amount for these bursaries. Ask your university's bursary office what the current grant covers, and how the money will reach you. It should know the details if it already holds, or plans to apply for, FoodBev SETA funding.
The page does not mention a work-back either. However, the SETA asks you to sign a declaration of intent and to provide progress reports and results, with your supervisor's signature. So expect to report on your work throughout the award.
Missing documents may lead to disqualification, and that risk also falls on your university's submission. So give your office enough time to check your pack.
Where You Can Study
Research awards apply at recognised public South African universities. This is because the university acts as the applicant, and the SETA asks for its tax clearance certificate. Students at private institutions should ask the SETA whether another stream suits them, since the page does not offer them this route.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
The research stream is for Master's and PhD students at recognised public South African universities. You must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident or a naturalised citizen. The SETA gives preference to students from previously disadvantaged groups.
Your topic matters. Master's students need a research topic that their supervisor endorses, and it must relate to the food and beverage manufacturing value chain. PhD students need an approved university research proposal with clear timeframes, and they should expect to finish within two to five years of the current academic year.
You must not receive any other bursary funding, and your university's bursary office must confirm this. So this award will not sit alongside other funding as some scholarships do.
Application Procedure
Email researchbursaries@foodbev.co.za to request a form, or see the FoodBev SETA student page. Complete it, then hand it with your documents to your university's bursary office. The university submits the application to the SETA. For general questions, call 011 253 7300.
Applications for this cycle have closed. Check the provider's site for the next intake.
