Science

Science bursaries support study in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, earth sciences and related fields. Funders include research councils, universities, mining and chemical companies and government science bodies, with a strong focus on postgraduate study where research is the main output.

A science degree opens several paths: research and academia, industry laboratories, environmental work and teaching. Funders know this, so many awards are broad and do not tie you to a single employer. Others, from companies in mining, chemicals or energy, are more specific and may include vacation work or a graduate position.

What funders usually ask for:

  • Strong results in the relevant science subjects, and Mathematics.
  • Registration for a BSc or an honours, master's or doctoral programme.
  • For research awards, a proposal, a supervisor and academic references.

Many scholarships for honours, master's and PhD study appear under MBA & Postgraduate, so browse both categories. For an overview of how to prepare, see our guide on getting ready for bursary season, and read the engineering category if you are also interested in applied fields.
