About FSCA Actuarial Science Bursary

The FSCA Actuarial Science Bursary helps talented Matric learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to study actuarial science. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority offered it for students starting in 2026. The call that we could trace closed on 31 August 2025.

We could not find a call for 2027, so this actuarial bursary is closed for now. The terms below come from a published copy of the advert with reference ASD 2026. A new round could change them, so check the FSCA website before you start an application.

Funding Details

The award covered registration and tuition fees, books, study material, stationery and internet costs, plus a once-off laptop. It also paid for accommodation, and it gave a monthly allowance for meals and living expenses. The advert did not publish a total value.

Two conditions came with this support. Recipients completed at least four weeks of experiential learning at the FSCA each year during vacation breaks. After graduating, they signed a work-back contract that lasted as long as their funding. Actuarial degrees can take several years, so work out how long your own service period might be.

Also keep a backup plan. Selection depended on your final results, so apply to other bursaries at the same time, and speak to your teachers about your Mathematics marks early in the year.

Where You Can Study

You needed to study at a recognised South African university. The advert did not name specific universities, but not every university offers Actuarial Science, and entry requirements are high. Check the programme's own marks requirement early, and apply to more than one university if you can.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply

This bursary targeted South African citizens who were in Matric and wanted to study Actuarial Science full-time. Applicants needed a minimum A symbol for Mathematics. They also had to come from a previously disadvantaged background and show that they could not afford their studies.

Because the call was for Matric learners, students already at university did not fit these terms. Final selection also depended on your final Matric results and your university admission, so a good application still needed good exam results.

Actuaries use mathematics and statistics to measure financial risk. They often work in insurance, pensions and investments, and a regulator needs these skills to check that financial firms are stable and fair. In your motivational letter, show that you understand what actuaries do. Explain why this career appeals to you, not only why you enjoy mathematics.

Application Procedure

Applicants applied online through the FSCA's recruitment portal and quoted the reference for that call. Only shortlisted candidates heard back. Watch the FSCA website for a new reference, since the old one has expired.

Applications for this cycle have closed. Check the provider's site for the next intake.
