About Gallagher Foundation Scholarship

The Gallagher Foundation Scholarship funds a full undergraduate scholarship at the University of Cape Town for academically strong South African students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. It is run by the Gallagher Foundation, a private philanthropic foundation founded in 2001, and is entirely separate from the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation.

Scholars are selected as much for leadership potential as for academic results, in line with the Foundation's mission of developing young leaders who will go on to positively shape their country's future. The scholarship can fund either a standard four-year undergraduate degree or a six-year medical degree at UCT.

Since its first South African cohort in 2002, the programme has built a long track record, graduating more than 240 scholars with a 90% completion rate, making it one of the more established scholarship programmes available to South African students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation scholarship?

No. The Gallagher Foundation is a separate, unrelated organisation founded by Ellen and Jerry Gallagher in 2001. It funds scholarships only at UCT, unlike the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation's entrepreneurship-focused programmes across multiple institutions.

Can I study any subject?

Yes. The scholarship covers any faculty at UCT, including the standard four-year undergraduate route or the six-year medical degree.

What is the income threshold?

Total household income should not exceed R600,000 per year, as the scholarship is aimed at financially disadvantaged students.

When does the scholarship close each year?

The Foundation has historically closed applications on 31 July for the following academic year. Confirm the current cycle's exact date on the Gallagher Foundation website before applying, as this year's window may have already closed.

How do I apply?

Apply directly through the Gallagher Foundation's South Africa application page (linked above).
