General

The General category collects opportunities that are open to students in any field of study, or that are not tied to a single career. Many are need-based or aimed at particular communities, schools or groups, which makes them a good place to start if you have not yet settled on a degree.

Because these awards are not linked to a skills shortage, the selection often rests on your circumstances and your potential. Funders may look at your household income, your school, where you live and your commitment to your studies. Some also support students who are already registered and need help to continue.

What funders usually ask for:

  • A South African ID and proof of residence.
  • Recent results, and proof of acceptance or registration.
  • Proof of household income, or affidavits where there is none.
  • A short letter explaining your situation and your plans.

Read each listing's eligibility section closely, because the groups these awards serve vary widely. For a step-by-step overview of how to prepare, see our guide on getting ready for bursary season. You can also browse by province using the sidebar.
