About Harmony Gold Bursary
The Harmony Gold Bursary funds full-time study in mining, engineering, geology and related technical fields. Harmony Gold, a South African gold mining company, uses the programme to recruit future talent, preferably from communities near its operations.
Harmony's own page confirms that the 2027 intake is closed, and it says the 2028 intake will open in October 2027. Published summaries of the 2027 advert gave a closing date of 9 October 2026 and said Harmony would not consider late applications. Both Grade 12 learners and current tertiary students could apply.
Funding Details
Harmony says bursars who complete their qualifications can join its Graduate Development Programme. However, its page and the published summaries do not list the amounts or costs that the bursary covers. Likewise, they do not state the length of any work-back period. Because Harmony runs the scheme to recruit talent, ask about any service obligation and read your contract before you sign.
Applicants should also expect a thorough process. Earlier programme details mention interviews and further screening for shortlisted candidates.
Ask whether the award covers tuition, accommodation, books and living costs. Also ask where vacation work might take place, since Harmony's operations may be far from your home or university.
Where You Can Study
You must study full-time at an accredited tertiary institution. The published details do not name specific universities. However, meeting Harmony's marks does not guarantee university entry, so check your chosen programme's own admission requirements as well.
Apply to your university early as well. An acceptance letter forms part of the application, so a late university application can weaken your bursary one.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
Published summaries of the 2027 form list Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current), Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geology, Survey and Planning, and Extractive Metallurgy. It also includes an "Other" option for different fields.
Harmony splits its annual mining bursary allocation into three parts: 60% for core and critical disciplines, 30% for non-core mining-related disciplines, and 10% for other disciplines. Its needs can change each year, so core fields tend to have the best chance. People with disabilities are welcome to apply, although selection may depend on the physical demands of the occupation.
Technical students should think about the work behind each option. Mining engineers plan and manage underground operations, while surveyors map and measure them. Metallurgists recover gold from ore, and geologists study where that ore lies. In your motivation, explain why you want this work and why mining suits you.
