About Harmony Gold
Harmony Gold is the largest gold mining company in South Africa. It began operating in 1950 and today runs its head office from Randfontein, on the West Rand. The company mines deep underground on the Witwatersrand and in the Free State. It also runs the Hidden Valley mine in Papua New Guinea. Its South African shafts include Kusasalethu, Tshepong, Moab Khotsong and Mponeng, which it bought from AngloGold Ashanti.
Harmony reported a workforce of more than 47,000 people in 2022, counting both employees and contractors. As a result, the mines shape the economies of the towns around them. Skills are scarce in this industry, so the company has good reason to train young people from its host communities.
How Harmony Gold supports students
The Harmony Gold bursary programme funds full-time study at university or university of technology. The company directs it mainly at communities in and around its mining operations. Harmony says it splits awards by field each year. About 60% go to core and critical mining fields, 30% to non-core but mining-related fields, and 10% to other disciplines.
The core fields include mining engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering (heavy current), geology, mine surveying and extractive metallurgy. Engineering applicants face the tightest marks, so prepare early. Harmony also offers internships, with more than one hundred placements a year for graduates and diplomates, each lasting between 12 and 24 months. In addition, bursary holders can move into the company's Graduate Development Programme once they qualify.
This pathway matters because the funding does not stop at the degree. A student who qualifies in a scarce field can step into practical workplace training and a recognised career route. Harmony also supports artisan and technical training for local youth through its training centres, so not every opportunity requires a degree.
What to know before applying
Harmony's published requirements ask for South African citizenship and a valid identity document. Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old. Matric applicants need a National Senior Certificate with every subject passed at 60% or higher. Engineering candidates need at least 70% for both Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Current university students need an average of at least 60%.
Harmony takes applications on a set annual cycle. For example, the intake for the 2027 academic year closed on 9 October 2026. Closing dates change from year to year, so check the careers section of the official Harmony website before you start.
Harmony's public bursary notice does not spell out any work-back terms. Therefore, read your bursary contract closely and ask about any service period before you sign. Submit complete, certified documents on time, and keep copies of everything you send. Finally, apply to other funders as well, because mining bursaries attract many strong candidates.
