About INSETA Bursary

The INSETA Bursary funds young people who study for careers in South Africa's insurance sector. INSETA runs Bursaries for Youth at public universities, universities of technology and public TVET colleges. Its criteria set caps of R95,000 at universities and R85,000 at universities of technology.

We could not find an open 2027 student call on INSETA's website, so this page sets no closing date. INSETA's funding usually moves through institutions, so your bursary office is the best place to start.

Funding Details

The university stream covers tuition, accommodation and prescribed textbooks for 12 months. Funding stops at R95,000 for public universities and R85,000 for universities of technology. The TVET stream covers tuition and textbooks, with a cap of R36,000.

These figures come from criteria that INSETA published in November 2024, so check that they still apply. The criteria also list recruitment, administration, monitoring and bursary fund administration as part of the project. That suggests that your institution or a partner will handle the money. The document does not mention a work-back, but ask your institution whether its agreement adds any conditions.

Where You Can Study

The bursary applies to public institutions only. At university level, it funds study from NQF Level 6 to Level 8 at public universities and universities of technology. At college level, it funds study at public TVET colleges. Students at private institutions fall outside these criteria.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply

At university level, INSETA's funded programmes include BCom or BAdmin degrees in insurance, risk, finance, investments and economics. They also include financial planning, marketing, information technology, and data science or data analysis. Law degrees qualify if they include a specialisation in financial planning, insurance or pension funds, and so do Honours studies in these areas.

At TVET level, the programmes cover N4, N5 and N6 certificates. The fields include financial management, business management, sales and marketing, and human resource management.

This means that you do not need to study insurance by name. For example, a data science or marketing student may qualify, because insurers rely on those skills too. Check that your qualification appears on the current list.

Remember that the award lasts for 12 months in each grant, so ask how funding works for later years of your studies. Also ask whether you must reapply each year.

Application Procedure

Ask your university or college's bursary or financial aid office whether it holds INSETA funding. Then follow its internal process and deadline. You can also check the INSETA website for grant window notices, but look carefully at the dates, because older documents remain online.
