INSETA

About INSETA

INSETA, the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority, is the sector education and training authority for South Africa's insurance industry. Like other SETAs, it exists under the Skills Development Act, and it uses money from the skills development levy to build skills in its sector.

The insurance sector needs a wide range of people. Insurers and brokers rely on risk specialists, financial planners, loss adjusters and investment staff. They also need marketers, data analysts and IT professionals, because modern insurance depends heavily on data and technology. INSETA's funded programmes reflect this range.

Most of the SETA's funding moves through grant windows rather than through direct student applications. During those windows, organisations such as employers, colleges and universities can apply for discretionary grants to run learning programmes. INSETA then monitors how they use the money, and this structure shapes how students reach its funding.

How INSETA supports students

INSETA runs Bursaries for Youth at two levels. At public universities and universities of technology, it funds study from NQF Level 6 to Level 8. At public TVET colleges, it funds N4, N5 and N6 study in fields such as financial management, business management, sales and marketing, and human resource management. Our INSETA Bursary page sets out the amounts and fields.

The university stream covers tuition, accommodation and prescribed textbooks for a 12-month programme, up to a set cap. Qualifying degrees include BCom and BAdmin in insurance, risk, finance, investments and economics, along with marketing, IT and data science. Law degrees with a relevant specialisation also count.

What to know before applying

You will probably not apply to INSETA yourself. Its older notices show that institutions submit the funding applications, and its criteria list learner recruitment as part of the funded administration. So start with the bursary or financial aid office at your university or college, and ask whether it holds an INSETA grant.

Timing also differs from a normal bursary. Because these awards depend on grant windows and on the projects that INSETA approves, there may be no single closing date for students. Your institution will set its own internal deadline if it has funding.

Check the INSETA website for its latest grant window notice before you plan around this funding. Older documents remain online, so look carefully at the dates on anything you read.

Also confirm which fields your institution has funding for, because a grant may cover only some of the listed programmes.
