About NHFC Bursary
The NHFC Bursary funds tertiary students whose studies can strengthen South Africa's housing finance sector. The National Housing Finance Corporation, a state-owned entity in human settlements, runs this Bursary Fund. Its 2026 advert gave a closing date of 30 September 2026, so this round has now closed.
The fund aims to build capacity, expertise and work opportunities in the sector. It suits you if you want to work on affordable housing, whether through construction, finance or planning.
Funding Details
NHFC's bursary page does not state an amount or list the costs that the award covers. So treat any figure that you see elsewhere with caution, and ask NHFC for the current terms.
The page does not mention a work-back or service obligation either. However, it does describe work opportunities as one of the fund's aims. Because this may mean contact with the sector after you graduate, read your contract carefully and ask what NHFC expects from you after your studies.
Where You Can Study
The NHFC page refers to tertiary students in general, and it does not name particular universities or restrict the fund to public institutions. Read the advert for the next round, and confirm with NHFC that your institution qualifies before you prepare your application.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
The fund accepts tertiary students at second-year and postgraduate level. Therefore, first-year students and matric learners cannot apply yet, but they can plan for a later round.
The field list is unusually broad for a housing funder. It covers the built environment, construction economics, developmental studies, economic development and energy efficiency. It also includes finance, housing, housing construction, human settlements, property markets, real estate and risk management.
That list means that a finance or risk student has as much reason to apply as a construction student. This reflects NHFC's work, since it lends to social housing institutions, developers and contractors, and it needs people who understand both the money and the buildings. If your course sits close to these fields, explain the link in your application.
NHFC also has a separate mandate for rural housing and bridging finance for subsidy housing developers, so students interested in these areas may also find a strong link to its work. You should check the fund's field list in each new advert, because it can change from one round to the next.
Application Procedure
Visit the NHFC Bursary Fund page for the latest advert and application form. NHFC's earlier bursary material gave bursary@nhfc.co.za as its address, so confirm this against the new advert before you send anything. Check the page for the next round from about the middle of the year, since the latest closing date fell in September.
Applications for this cycle have closed. Check the provider's site for the next intake.
