About WeThinkCode Bursary

The WeThinkCode Bursary gives young South Africans free training in software development, with sponsors paying the tuition. WeThinkCode runs the programme for people aged 17 to 35. You do not need earlier coding experience, and older listings say you do not even need Matric.

Sources describe the programme in different ways. Older listings mention two years, while a newer guide describes 16 months. Stipend details also differ, and we could not find a current admissions page with fixed dates. Therefore, treat the terms below as a guide and confirm them with WeThinkCode before you apply.

Funding Details

Corporate sponsors pay your tuition. Listings also describe two paid four-month internships with a sponsor, which give you real experience before you finish. Older sources mention a stipend of R2,000 a month for food and transport. A newer listing says that qualifying students may receive a needs-based stipend, so do not budget for it until you have confirmation.

An older listing says graduates must work for the sponsor company for the same length of time as their bursary. Ask whether this rule still applies, and read your agreement closely before you accept a place.

Remember that full-time training leaves little time for a job, so plan how you will cover rent, food and data while you study.

Where You Can Study

WeThinkCode teaches the programme itself, so you do not need a university place. Listings refer to a Johannesburg campus. Check the current campus locations on its website, and think about where you would live and how you would travel each day.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply

You must be aged 17 to 35 and be eligible to study or work in South Africa. One listing limits entry to South African citizens and permanent residents, so check this rule if you hold another status. You must also be able to attend the campus.

This coding bursary suits people who enjoy solving problems but cannot pay for a university degree. Your marks at school matter less here than your performance in the selection process. That makes it a useful option for people who left school early or who want to change careers.

Selection has been demanding in the past. Older listings describe online tests followed by a four-week bootcamp of team programming, with at least ten hours a day, including weekends. Top performers then received places. Ask how selection works now, and arrange your time and transport so that you could complete any bootcamp.

Application Procedure

Apply through the WeThinkCode website and complete its eligibility questions and tests. Older listings say places fill on a first-come, first-served basis, so apply as soon as an intake opens. Bursary questions can go to info@wethinkcode.co.za.
