Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) is South Africa's state-owned provider of air traffic control, air navigation and related aviation safety services. It is a Schedule 2 public entity and operates from ACSA airports as well as other aerodromes around the country, in addition to managing airspace extending over large portions of the Atlantic and Southern Indian Ocean.
ATNS trains its own aviation specialists rather than recruiting them ready-made from universities. Its Aviation Training Academy (ATA), based at Bonaero Park in Gauteng, runs several in-house bursary/cadetship streams covering roles such as Air Traffic Services Officer, Aeronautical Information Management Officer, Target Generating Officer, Airport Management Centre Liaison Officer and Simulator Support Officer.
Because these programmes lead directly into safety-critical aviation roles, selection involves aptitude assessments, interviews, a medical fitness examination by an Aviation Medical Examiner, and security vetting, in addition to the standard academic requirements.
