About Chevening
Chevening is the United Kingdom government's international scholarship programme. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office funds it, together with partner organisations. The programme began in 1983 and now reaches future leaders in more than 160 countries and territories. South Africa has taken part for more than three decades, and the British Council helps run the process locally.
The idea is simple. The UK invests in people who are likely to lead change at home. In return, those people build lasting links with British universities and with other scholars around the world. Over time, hundreds of South Africans have joined the global Chevening alumni network.
How Chevening supports students
Chevening is a fully funded scholarship for one year of taught Master's study at a UK university. It is not an undergraduate bursary. Recipients usually receive tuition, a monthly living allowance, and the cost of flights to and from the UK. Further allowances can apply, and the exact package is set each year, so read the current award terms on the official site.
Scholars may study almost any subject, as long as the course is an eligible one-year Master's. For example, past South African scholars have chosen public policy, law, engineering, health, journalism and the environment. Applicants choose three courses when they apply, and a university offer is still needed before the award can start.
Chevening does not look only at marks. Selectors want evidence of leadership, influence and a clear plan for what you will do after your studies. As a result, your essays and your work record carry real weight.
What to know before applying
Applicants must be South African citizens, or citizens of another eligible country. They must also hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for postgraduate study in the UK. Chevening asks for at least two years of work experience, counted in hours. Volunteering and unpaid work can count, but check the exact rules for the round you enter.
Scholars must return to South Africa for at least two years once the award ends. They may not stay in the UK for work during that period. This is a firm condition, so think about it carefully before you apply.
The application window is short and falls in the second half of the year. The round for 2027 to 2028 study closes in early October 2026. However, dates change every year. Check the Chevening South Africa page for the current deadline, the full eligibility rules and the list of partner universities. Start early, because references, essays and English-language proof all take time to prepare.
