The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's flagship global scholarship programme, funding a fully-funded one-year Master's degree at any UK university, in any subject. South Africa is one of the eligible countries, and Chevening treats scholars as future leaders rather than simply funding a degree.

The programme exists to build lasting relationships between the UK and future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers around the world. Because of this, Chevening looks beyond academic results alone, weighing leadership potential and professional experience heavily in selection.

Chevening expects a genuine return on this investment too, but not in the form of employment. Instead, scholars are expected to return home and apply what they've learned, strengthening ties between the UK and their own country over time.

Chevening covers full university tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, and an economy class return airfare to the UK. On top of that, scholars receive additional grants and allowances to help cover essential costs during their year of study.

Because the scholarship is fully funded, successful applicants generally do not need to find additional funding to complete their Master's degree, which removes one of the biggest barriers to studying in the UK.

Chevening scholars can study at any UK university, provided the course is a full-time, taught Master's degree, not a research-focused MRes programme. You need an unconditional offer from at least one of your three chosen courses before the scholarship is confirmed.

After your scholarship ends, Chevening requires you to return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years, reinforcing the programme's focus on building expertise that benefits your home country.
