About Feenix

Feenix is a Public Benefit Organisation and a crowdfunding platform for students. It was created in 2015 and 2016, when the #FeesMustFall movement showed how heavily university costs weigh on South African families. Its guiding idea is that access to education should not depend on wealth.

Many graduates cannot collect their certificates because of unpaid historical fees. Without a certificate, they struggle to find work, and without work, they cannot repay what they owe. Feenix was built to break that cycle.

How Feenix supports students

Feenix does not run one fixed pool of money. Instead, it works in two ways. First, students create a profile and share their own story on a secure platform. Supporters, including individuals and communities, can then give towards the fees. Second, companies and trusts use Feenix to deliver their own bursary programmes.

These corporate partners include the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation and the Absa CSI Trust. For example, the Absa programme has focused on clearing historical debt for students who cannot graduate or move into work. Feenix verifies each applicant and handles the payments to the institution, so donors know their money reaches the right account.

Feenix also offers support that goes beyond money, to help students succeed in their studies and prepare for work. No work-back obligation is attached to Feenix-administered funding. Its purpose is to unblock graduates, not to recruit them.

The scale of the problem explains why Feenix matters. Historical debt can block a graduate from receiving a certificate or transcript, which makes job applications difficult. Corporate donors see the value in clearing that debt, because each paid account lets a young person enter the workforce. For students, the benefit is practical: a cleared balance can mean the start of a career.

What to know before applying

Each programme on the Feenix bursary site has its own rules, closing date and list of required documents. Some are open to final-year students, while others focus on outstanding debt from earlier years. Read the requirements for the specific programme before you apply.

Students who prefer to crowdfund must tell a clear and honest story. Explain your course, your results, your financial situation and how much you still owe. A personal, specific story tends to attract more support than a vague one.
