About MINTEK
MINTEK is South Africa's national mineral research organisation. It traces its history to 1934 and works from its head office on Malibongwe Drive in Randburg, Johannesburg. Its products and services reach clients in more than 40 countries. Few institutions in the country know minerals processing as well.
Day to day, MINTEK tests ore samples, develops processes for extracting valuable metals and builds technology that mining companies can use. This work supports mineral beneficiation, which means adding value to raw minerals before they leave the country. As a result, the organisation sits between university research and industry, and its staff and students work on real problems.
Its research is organised in three main clusters. The first covers mineral processing and characterisation, including mineralogy and analytical chemistry. The second is extractive metallurgy, which spans biometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. The third brings together mining, materials and automation, with work on process control, advanced materials and mining economics.
How MINTEK supports students
MINTEK offers bursaries, internships and postdoctoral positions as part of its careers pathway. Its bursary page says the programme aims to attract more women and black South Africans into science, engineering and technology. Funding is aimed mainly at full-time postgraduate students whose studies match the organisation's research needs.
Fields named on the official page include engineering, chemistry, physics, geology, materials science, applied mathematics, biotechnology, microbiology and environmental sciences. Past adverts on other sites also listed undergraduate and BTech awards in areas such as chemical, electrical, mechanical and mining engineering. For example, minerals processing, process control and metallurgy appeared often.
What to know before applying
MINTEK does not run one fixed intake. Instead, it advertises each opportunity on its careers portal when a need arises, together with the requirements and obligations that apply to that award. As a result, no single closing date can be quoted here.
Earlier postgraduate adverts asked for South African citizenship, full-time study at a recognised South African university and an average of at least 60% with no failed courses. Treat these as a guide only, since conditions can change. Meanwhile, you can prepare by keeping your marks high and your documents ready. Check the careers portal often, and use the contact details on the official website if you have questions about a specific advert.
Postgraduate applicants should also think about their research topic early. A project on leaching, smelting or process control, for instance, may fit the organisation's clusters well. Talk to your supervisor, because a clear link between your thesis and MINTEK's priorities can strengthen your case.
Women and black applicants are an explicit focus of the programme. Therefore, mention relevant achievements in your motivation, such as research projects, laboratory work or leadership roles.
