Older third-party listings say the bursary excludes national diploma and first-year students. We could not confirm this on Mintek's current page.
Documents Needed
Mintek does not publish a standard list on its bursaries page. Expect each advert to state what it needs. In the meantime, prepare your ID, academic record, proof of registration and a short research summary.
About Mintek Bursaries
Mintek bursaries support full-time postgraduate students working on research themes that Mintek treats as a priority. Mintek is South Africa's national minerals research organisation. Its programme aims to attract more women and black people into science, engineering and technology.
These science and engineering bursaries do not follow a fixed annual date. Instead, Mintek says it opens calls "according to pipeline requirements" and advertises them on its careers portal. No closing date appears on its bursaries page today, so check that portal regularly.
Funding Details
Mintek says it supports students financially, but its bursaries page gives no amounts or list of covered costs. Instead, it says each advertised opportunity will set out its own requirements and obligations. Consequently, you should read the advert closely for any service commitment. Mintek also runs separate internship and postdoctoral programmes on its careers pages, which may interest you after your degree.
Ask whether the award allows other funding, and how it handles delays to your research.
Where You Can Study
The Mintek page does not name particular universities, and it does not exclude any. You must study full-time, however, so part-time postgraduate students should ask before applying. Each advertised opportunity may also add its own conditions.
Ask your university's postgraduate office whether your degree and research plan meet funders' usual requirements. It can also tell you if other funding could conflict with a Mintek award, since many bursaries limit double funding.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
Mintek names these fields: all fields of engineering, biotechnology and biochemistry, microbiology, environmental sciences, all fields of chemistry, physics, geology, material science and applied mathematics.
Your topic matters as well as your field, because Mintek funds research themes it considers a priority. Before you apply, read about its research areas, such as mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, mineralogy and advanced materials. Then explain clearly how your project connects to that work. A strong link gives you a better case than good marks alone.
A good way to prepare is to read Mintek's annual report and research pages. Then speak to your supervisor about how your project could support that work. For example, a chemistry student might study a new way to recover metals, while an engineering student might work on measurement and control systems.
Application Procedure
Check the Mintek careers portal for an advertised bursary opportunity, and follow the instructions in that advert. Older listings give bursaries@mintek.co.za as a contact, but we could not confirm that this address is still active.
