About the Schauenburg Education Trust

Schauenburg Systems is a South African manufacturer of safety and communication equipment for the mining industry. Based in Kempton Park, it supplies fire detection, tracking and communication systems used in underground and surface mines. The Schauenburg Education Trust grew out of the company's wish to give something back. Its stated aim is to uplift disadvantaged people and communities by opening up educational opportunities, with a focus on skills the country is short of.

How the trust supports students

The trust funds bursaries for selected students rather than running an open-ended scheme. Its main focus is electrical and electronic engineering, which the trust regards as a scarce skill. The most recent call also included business studies, namely a BCom in Business Management or Business Administration. Both choices suit the mining technology sector, which needs engineers and managers.

Funding may include tuition, registration and examination fees, accommodation, textbooks and a living allowance. Recipients are also expected to join a short vacation work programme of about three weeks. This exposes them to real workplaces and helps them see whether the industry suits them.

The trust works with a short list of universities. In the latest round these were the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg, the Vanderbijlpark campus of North-West University and the University of the Witwatersrand. Students at other universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges could not apply.

What to know before applying

Applicants must hold a valid South African ID and be Black persons as defined in B-BBEE legislation. They must be enrolled at one of the listed universities. Preference was given to Black women, applicants under 35 and students with disabilities. In addition, shortlisted candidates attend interviews and complete psychometric assessments. Earlier calls described support for students already in their studies, such as first-years applying for second-year funding, so check whether the current call accepts new first-year students.

The last round opened on 1 June 2026 and closed on 31 July 2026. Applications were made online through the trust's page on the Schauenburg website. Expect to supply a certified ID copy, your matric certificate and your full academic record, together with your latest results.
