Subtrop SAAGA

SAAGA (the South African Avocado Growers' Association) is affiliated with Subtrop and represents avocado producers across South Africa's subtropical growing regions, including Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. The association coordinates research, market development, and extension services for the avocado industry, working alongside sister associations for mangoes, litchis, and other subtropical crops under the Subtrop umbrella. Its research programme funds cultivar development, pest and disease management, and post-harvest studies that have supported the growth of South African avocado exports over the past two decades.

SAAGA's bursary exists because the industry's continued expansion depends on a steady supply of agricultural scientists, horticulturists, and agricultural economists with subtropical-fruit-specific expertise -- a scarce skill set that generic agriculture graduates rarely bring. The bursary supports students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds studying towards a BSc Agriculture or equivalent degree, majoring in horticultural science, agricultural economics, or agribusiness, and recipients are encouraged to focus their seminars and research projects on avocado-related topics where possible.

A work-back obligation does apply: successful applicants sign a contractual agreement committing to work for Subtrop for one year for every year of bursary funding received, provided a suitable position is available. If no post is open within Subtrop itself when a recipient graduates, the association assists in placing them with a SAAGA member producer instead, so the obligation is honoured within the industry even when it cannot be honoured in-house.
