About Subtrop Saaga Bursary
The SAAGA Bursary, funded by the South African Avocado Growers' Association under the Subtrop umbrella, supports students from historically disadvantaged groups studying towards a BSc (Agric) or equivalent degree, majoring in Horticultural Science, Agricultural Economics or Agribusiness, including Honours and Master's level study. The bursary's explicit aim is to see appropriately trained graduates of colour enter the South African avocado industry. Recipients are required to work for Subtrop for one year per year of funding, where a position is available, and must repay the bursary if they fail their course.
Funding Details
Bursary value depends on each individual case and is reviewed annually. Awards are for one year at a time, with continuation dependent on satisfactory academic progress.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
You must be from a historically disadvantaged group and studying towards a BSc (Agric) or equivalent degree, majoring in Horticultural Science (or a related field), Agricultural Economics or Agribusiness. Both undergraduate students and those studying towards Honours or Master's degrees in these fields will be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a work-back obligation?
Yes - confirmed. Recipients must work for Subtrop for one year per year the bursary was awarded, if a position is available; if none is available, there is no obligation. If a recipient fails their course, the bursary must be repaid over a period equal to its length.
Does this cover postgraduate study?
Yes, unlike the Lindsey Milne scheme - Honours and Master's study in the same fields will also be considered.
How do I apply, and what were the most recent dates?
