Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE)

SITFE (the Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education), launched in 1965, is one of South Africa's oldest education trust funds and is administered by the South African Sugar Association (SASA) from Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal. Over nearly six decades it has supported more than 10,200 students with bursaries, alongside funding school building projects and providing broader financial assistance to educational institutions in South Africa's sugarcane-growing regions of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

The trust's mission is to support, promote, and advance sustainable, quality education specifically within sugarcane-growing communities — reflecting the sugar industry's dependence on a stable, skilled local workforce and its long-standing role as a dominant employer and economic anchor in these often rural, historically under-resourced districts. SITFE awards a maximum of 41 full bursaries each year to two defined groups: children of sugarcane farm workers, and students from the "missing middle" (households with a combined income of roughly R350,000 to R600,000) who reside in sugarcane-growing areas, for study in the faculties of Science, Engineering, or Agriculture — fields directly relevant to the sugar industry's own technical and agricultural needs.

Unlike many company-linked bursaries, SITFE states explicitly on its own website that "a bursary does not have to be repaid," and publicly available information describes no work-back or bonded-employment obligation attached to the award.
