Umgeni Water is a state-owned water board based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. It began operating in 1974 and reports to the national Department of Water and Sanitation. On 1 July 2023 it took over the Mhlathuze Water area and became uMngeni-uThukela Water. Many people still search for it under the old name.

The board supplies bulk water, not water to your tap. It runs dams, treatment works and long pipelines. Municipalities, industry and households across the province then buy that water and pass it on. It also provides wastewater and related technical services. As a result, it is one of the largest water utilities in the country.

How Umgeni Water supports students

The Umgeni Water bursary exists because the utility needs scarce technical skills. Dams, treatment plants and pipelines need engineers and scientists to design, build and maintain them. Many of these assets are ageing, and KwaZulu-Natal's population keeps growing. For that reason, the board funds students who can later join its own teams.

The funding is broad. It covers registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation, meals, and prescribed books and stationery. Together, these costs make up most of what a full-time student pays to study away from home. Some past calls targeted matriculants and first- or second-year students. Others focused on students in their later years. Check which group the current call is for.

What to know before applying

A work-back obligation applies. Bursary holders sign a contract with the utility. Published descriptions say they serve the board for one year for every year it funded them. In other words, a three-year bursary means three years of service after you qualify. Read your contract carefully before you sign it.

Past calls have asked for South African citizenship and a strong academic record. They have also looked for financial need and, in some years, permanent residence in KwaZulu-Natal. Closing dates change every year, and the board has extended deadlines before. Do not rely on an old date.
