Umgeni Water, now operating as uMngeni-uThukela Water following a boundary extension, is a state-owned water board responsible for bulk water supply and wastewater treatment services across large parts of KwaZulu-Natal, headquartered in Pietermaritzburg. As a public entity reporting to the Department of Water and Sanitation, it operates the dams, treatment works, and pipeline networks that supply municipalities, industry, and households across the province, making it one of the most significant water utilities in South Africa. Its bursary scheme supports students in fields including Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Finance, with funding that covers registration and tuition fees, accommodation, meals, and prescribed books and stationery.
The utility funds bursaries to secure a pipeline of scarce technical and engineering skills for its own operations: water and wastewater infrastructure requires specialist civil and chemical engineers to design, build, and maintain it, and South Africa has a well-documented shortage of these skills relative to the scale of ageing infrastructure that needs upgrading and expansion to keep pace with population growth in KwaZulu-Natal.
A work-back obligation does apply. On completing their studies, bursary recipients are required to serve Umgeni Water (uMngeni-uThukela Water) under a service contract equal in length to the number of years the bursary was received, directly converting the funded studies into staffed positions within the utility.
