Umgeni Water Postgraduate Bursary: Requirements & How to Apply

The Umgeni Water Postgraduate Bursary funded master's and doctoral research that could help to modernise South Africa's water sector. Umgeni Water, now called uMngeni-uThukela Water, offered these Amanzi postgraduate bursaries with a focus on technology. The last call that we could trace closed on 9 June 2023, according to a University of Limpopo notice.

We could not find a newer call, so this water research bursary is closed for now. It differs from the organisation's undergraduate bursary, which covers engineering and science students from second year. Check the careers page for any new postgraduate round.

The notice did not state a value, a time limit or a list of covered costs. So ask whether an award would pay your fees, a living allowance or research costs, and whether it could continue beyond one year.

The notice also did not mention work-back. State-owned water providers can link funding to service, so ask about this before you accept. Postgraduate funders also often limit other income, so check whether you could keep a part-time job or another award alongside this bursary. Also ask who would own any data or results from your research.

The notice did not limit the award to one university. It appeared on the University of Limpopo website, but it did not say that only Limpopo students could apply. Speak to your supervisor early, and ask your university's postgraduate office whether a new call has reached it.
