DUT Fees

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Fees at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) depend on the modules you register for and whether you live in a residence. DUT charges you for every academic course you register for. The figures below come from DUT's 2026 student fees booklet, and the Study Opportunities 2027 guide shows 2026 module fees, as the 2027 fees were not final.

The first instalment

You must pay a first instalment on the day of registration. In 2026, the amounts were:

  • Annual tuition only: R5,260
  • Semester tuition only: R3,229
  • Annual residence only: R5,983
  • Semester residence only: R3,668

Students who register for both semesters at the start of the year pay the annual amount. The first instalment does not include deposits, subject levies, transport levies or back payments, which some departments and campuses add.

Paying the balance

For annual tuition in 2026, you paid 35% of the balance outstanding as at 1 May, another 35% of the balance as at 31 July, and the rest as at 2 October. Semester students paid 50% of the balance by 30 April and the rest by 29 May, or for the second semester, 50% by 28 August and the rest by 30 October.

Settlement discount

DUT allows a 5% discount on tuition settled by 27 March 2026 for annual and first-semester registrations, or by 31 July 2026 for second-semester registrations. The discount does not apply to NSFAS-funded or sponsored students, or to residence fees.

Module fees

As an example, Engineering Mathematics 1A was listed at R5,010 for 2026 in the Study Opportunities guide. Add up your modules to estimate your year's tuition.

Residence charges

DUT's residence fees include a house committee levy of R150 a year. DUT has waived the residence security deposit, but students who damage university or outsourced residence property pay for the damage.

Your responsibilities

DUT holds you personally liable for all tuition and accommodation fees, even if you expect a bursary or sponsor to pay. Payments go first to any debt from earlier years. Fees stay payable in full even if strikes or other disruptions interrupt the programme. Not receiving a statement does not excuse late payment, so check the student portal.

If you do not pay

Students who miss the final instalment may not be allowed to write tests or exams, receive results, receive their qualification or graduate. DUT can also hand unpaid accounts to debt collectors, and you remain liable for their charges.

Before graduation

If you still owe fees when you finish, you must pay your arrears at least 14 working days before your graduation date to receive your official certificate.

Funding your studies

Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS. Browse our bursaries, or read the DUT overview.
