First-time undergraduate students apply to the Durban University of Technology (DUT) through the Central Applications Office (CAO) online platform. For the 2027 intake, applications had to reach the CAO by 30 September 2026, and some programmes closed earlier. The steps below come from DUT's How to Apply 2027 guide.
Step 1: Choose your course
Identify the course you want to study, using DUT's 2027 career leaflets and the Study Opportunities guide. Check the points and subjects you need on the DUT admission requirements page. Each programme also has its own CAO code, which you enter on the application. For example, the Accounting Bridging Course in Durban uses the CAO code DUDABR, and it is not funded by NSFAS.
Step 2: Get ready
Have your cellphone and an active email address ready, because you need both to complete the online application. Prepare certified copies of:
- Your identity document
- Your final Grade 11 results and your Grade 12 certificate, or your June or trial report if you have not written your final exams
Step 3: Apply through the CAO and pay
Complete the CAO online application and upload your documents. Pay the application fee of R250 for South African citizens or R300 for international applicants. Your application becomes active only once the CAO receives your payment, so make sure that your application and fee both arrive before the closing date.
Step 4: Wait for the outcome
DUT evaluates your application. If the outcome is positive, you receive a notification from the CAO and an acceptance package from DUT. You are notified by email or SMS. If you asked for residence on your application, the Housing Department also contacts you once your outcome is finalised.
Former students
If you have studied at DUT or another university before, you do not apply through the CAO. Instead, you use DUT's own online application.
International and IEB results
If you have international secondary school results, or IEB or IGCSE results, you need an evaluation of equivalence to the NSC. Use SAQA for diplomas and the Universities South Africa Matriculation Board for degrees.
Apply for NSFAS
Apply for funding at the same time. On the NSFAS website, create a myNSFAS account, click Apply, answer the questions, upload your documents and submit. Your reference number appears on screen and is sent to your phone and email.
Important to know
Submitting a complete application does not guarantee selection, admission or registration. Check the CAO website for any updates on your application. Read about registration payments on the DUT fees page.
