Tuition at the University of Limpopo (UL) is charged per module, so your total depends on the modules in your programme each year. UL publishes a student fees guide, a detailed list of tuition fees per qualification and a residence fee schedule. The figures below come from UL's 2026 fee documents.
The advance payment
Self-funded full-time students must make an advance payment towards tuition and residence fees before they register. UL credits it to your fee account. In 2026, the amounts were:
- South African and SADC students: R3,000 for tuition and R2,000 for residence, a total of R5,000
- International students from outside SADC: R6,000 for tuition and R2,000 for residence
- Other international students: R9,000 for tuition and R2,000 for residence
UL advises using immediate payment clearance options, particularly during registration, so that your payment reflects in time.
Paying on time
UL asks you to pay registration fees at least six days before your registration date, because bank deposits and EFTs can take up to four business days to reflect. Always use your student number as the only payment reference. Payments without it cannot be allocated until you send proof of payment to studentfeesqueries@ul.ac.za. You can pay by card at the cashier, by direct deposit or by EFT.
If you cancel
If you cancel your registration or residence place, you must do so in writing on the official forms. You then remain liable for non-refundable administration fees, which in 2026 were R3,430 for academic administration and R1,310 for residence for local students. International students also forfeit an international levy of R8,330.
Tuition per module
Because UL charges per module, its detailed tuition list shows a price for each module in each qualification. For example, many first-year law modules in the extended LLB cost R3,900 each in 2026. Add up the modules in your curriculum to estimate your year's tuition.
Residence fees
In 2026, most residences on the main campus charged about R21,400 to R21,500 for a double room and R24,700 for a single room per year.
Statements and debt
UL sends statements of account to your university email and by SMS every month. Students with outstanding debt cannot get clearance for their academic records, and UL does not release degree certificates until all fees are paid. You also remain liable if a sponsor fails to pay.
Other levies
UL also charges some smaller fees, such as an SRC levy of about R1,420. Check the fees guide for the full list that applies to your programme.
Funding your studies
Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS. The Limpopo provincial government and several municipalities also fund local students. Browse our bursaries, or read the University of Limpopo overview.
