How to Apply to Univen

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Applying to the University of Venda (Univen) is free, and every applicant applies online. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate, South African and international applicants. Univen's 2026 fees booklet states that no application fee applies to 2027 applications, and it gives 30 September 2026 as the closing date.

Step 1: Download the prospectus

Start by reading the Univen prospectus. It sets out the programmes, the APS and subject requirements, and the documents you need. Compare your results with the requirements on the Univen admission requirements page, and choose programmes that suit your marks.

Step 2: Apply online

Create your application on the Univen website, or continue one that you started earlier. Then upload clear PDF copies of your supporting documents, such as:

  • Your identification, such as your ID
  • Your school results or academic records
  • Any other documents that your programme requires

Univen's prospectus is more specific about what you need:

  • Grade 12 learners: your ID or passport and your Grade 11 final (term 4) results, stamped by your school
  • Students at another institution: your academic record and a certificate of good conduct
  • International applicants: a study and residence permit, medical insurance and a SAQA evaluation certificate

To apply online, you need a South African ID number, a cellphone number and an email address. You can save your application and return later to finish it. Make sure every scan is clear, because unclear documents can delay your application.

Step 3: Check your application status

After you apply, monitor your application on the Univen website. Check it regularly for updates and for any request for missing documents.

Step 4: Registration

If Univen accepts you, you move on to registration. Self-funded students, and students whose sponsor confirmation has not arrived, pay a registration amount of R5,000. Students who applied successfully for NSFAS or another bursary must show proof of funding to register without paying that amount. Read more on the Univen fees page.

Watch for changes

Univen's FAQ notes that closing dates and programme requirements can change between admission cycles. So check the current application notice before you rely on a date. Univen also publishes the next year's fees booklet only once applications for that year have opened.

Residence

If you need student housing, ask about it when you apply. Univen charges a room deposit before it allocates you a room, and places are limited.

Funding

Apply for NSFAS separately, using its own dates. For questions about funding, students can contact their financial aid office or Fundi's client services on 0860 55 55 44. For fee questions, email studentfinancesupport@univen.ac.za.
