The University of the Western Cape (UWC) uses its own points system to assess applicants. It weights English and Mathematics more heavily than other subjects, so UWC points scores look higher than a standard APS. The figures below come from UWC's admission pages and its general admissions criteria for 2027.
How UWC calculates your points
Your UWC score is based on seven subjects: English, another language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your three best other subjects. English and Mathematics earn extra points. For example, a score of 80% to 89% earns 13 points in English or Mathematics, but 7 points in other subjects. At 90% or above, English and Mathematics earn 15 points each, while other subjects earn 8.
Life Orientation counts for little, with a maximum of 3 points. Mathematical Literacy is scored as an "other" subject, not in the Mathematics column. As a result, applicants with Mathematics usually score higher than those with Mathematical Literacy.
Basic requirements
You need a National Senior Certificate with a bachelor's degree pass, which means a rating of at least 4 (50% to 59%) in four recognised subjects. This must include English as a home or first additional language at level 4. Most programmes also need another language at level 3. Each faculty then adds its own subject and points requirements.
Minimum points for popular UWC programmes
- BCom, BCom Accounting and BCom Financial Accounting: 30 points, with Mathematics at level 4. BCom Accounting also asks for Accounting at level 5, unless you have Mathematics at level 5.
- BAdmin: 30 points, with Mathematics at level 3 or Mathematical Literacy at level 5
- LLB: at least 37 points
- Bachelor of Pharmacy: 38 points
- Education programmes: 33 points
- Natural Sciences programmes: 33 points
- Bachelor of Nursing: at least 30 points, with Life Sciences at level 4
Extended programmes
UWC offers extended curriculum programmes in commerce for students who need extra support. To be considered for the extended BCom or BCom Accounting, you apply for the mainstream programme, because the application system does not list the extended versions separately.
Competitive programmes
Programmes in Dentistry, Community and Health Sciences, and Law are very competitive. UWC advises keeping your options open when you apply for them. Meeting the minimum points does not guarantee you a place in any programme, because UWC selects the strongest applicants when places are limited.
Check your score
UWC offers an online APS calculator on its website, which uses its own points table. Use it with your latest results to see which programmes you can aim for, and compare the result with the requirements for your choice.
