The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) admits students based on an Admission Point Score (APS) and the subject levels that each programme sets. Many VUT diplomas start from an APS of 20 to 24, while health sciences and information technology ask for more. The figures below come from VUT's 2027 undergraduate minimum admission requirements.
How VUT calculates your APS
VUT uses the NSC achievement levels: 3 for 40% to 49%, 4 for 50% to 59%, 5 for 60% to 69%, 6 for 70% to 79%, 7 for 80% to 89% and 8 for 90% and above. It counts a maximum of six subjects and leaves out Life Orientation. Many programmes ask for a slightly higher APS if you took Mathematical Literacy instead of Mathematics or Technical Mathematics.
Minimum APS for popular VUT programmes
- Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Laboratory Science: 27
- Diploma in Information Technology: 26 with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, or 28 with Mathematical Literacy
- Engineering diplomas, such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Electronic Engineering: 24, with level 4 in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and English
- Diploma in Biotechnology: 23
- Diploma in Operations Management: 23
- BEd in Senior Phase and FET Teaching: 22 with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
- Diploma in Analytical Chemistry: 21
- Diploma in Human Resources Management: 20 with Mathematics, or 21 with Mathematical Literacy
- Accountancy diplomas, such as Cost and Management Accounting: 20 with Mathematics, or 22 with Mathematical Literacy
- Diploma in Tourism Management: 20 with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
- Diploma in Non-Destructive Testing: 19
Subject requirements
Each programme also lists its compulsory subjects. For example, the accountancy diplomas ask for level 4 in Accounting and English, plus Mathematics at level 3 or Mathematical Literacy at level 5. The Diploma in Agricultural Management asks for level 4 in English and level 3 in Agriculture or Life Sciences.
Extended engineering programmes
VUT offers four-year extended versions of its engineering diplomas, alongside the three-year mainstream programmes. If you qualify for both a mainstream and an extended diploma, VUT advises you to choose the mainstream programme as your first choice.
Extra selection and mature applicants
Some programmes in the Faculty of Human Sciences add compulsory selection criteria, such as a practical interview and a portfolio. For programmes such as the Diploma in Policing, mature applicants aged 23 with Grade 12 who do not meet the entry requirements can submit proof of permanent employment in a related field.
TVET qualifications
VUT accepts some TVET results instead of school subjects, such as 60% in Engineering Mathematics N4 for some science diplomas. Applicants with N3 to N6 results should check VUT's website for their requirements.
Meeting the minimum
VUT notes that meeting the minimum subjects and levels does not guarantee acceptance. Initial selection uses your final Grade 11 or latest Grade 12 results.
