University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

The University of the Witwatersrand, better known as Wits, is a research university in the heart of Johannesburg. It was formally established on 1 March 1922 and now teaches about 40,000 students. Its campuses in Braamfontein and Parktown place students close to the city's business, health and mining sectors.

About Wits

Wits grew out of the University College of Johannesburg, which became the University of the Witwatersrand in 1922. Postwar strikes delayed the official opening ceremony until 4 October that year. By 1923, it had six faculties and just over 1,000 students.

The university has grown alongside Johannesburg ever since. It describes itself as inextricably linked to the city's development for over 100 years, and it claims a place in the top 1% of universities worldwide. Its strengths include health sciences, engineering, mining research, business and the humanities.

Faculties and campuses

Today, Wits teaches through five faculties, which contain more than 30 schools. Its main campus is in Braamfontein, and it spreads across seven campuses in Braamfontein and Parktown. The university also runs a Rural Campus in Mpumalanga and research sites such as the Sterkfontein Caves, part of the Cradle of Humankind.

Applying to Wits

Wits applications run well ahead of the academic year. For the 2027 intake, all Health Sciences programmes and a few others, such as Architectural Studies and Film and Television, closed on 30 June 2026. All other undergraduate programmes closed on 30 September 2026. So check your programme's date early, because some close three months before the rest.

You apply online and then pay the fee in a second step. The undergraduate application fee is R100, while postgraduate applications cost R200, although current Wits students do not pay it. Postgraduate closing dates vary by programme.

Fees and funding

Your fees depend on your degree and the courses you take each year, so check the current fee schedule for your programme. Living in Johannesburg also means budgeting for transport and accommodation. Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS, and many companies fund Wits engineering, commerce and health students. Browse our bursaries to compare options.

Is Wits right for you?

Wits suits students who want a large, urban research university with strong links to industry. Because it is selective and some programmes close early, start your application as soon as the next round opens in your matric year.

Before you apply to Wits

Wits ranks applicants for many programmes on their marks, and the strongest applicants often receive early offers. So send your application as soon as your Grade 11 or mid-year Grade 12 results are available. Check the Wits course finder for the subject levels your programme needs, because these differ widely between faculties. If you also need a residence, apply for it at the same time as your studies, because residence places are limited.
