How to Apply to Wits

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

You apply to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) online, and you pay an application fee of R100. You may apply for up to three programmes, and their order does not matter. For the 2027 intake, Health Sciences and a few other programmes closed on 30 June 2026, while all other undergraduate programmes and residence applications closed on 30 September 2026.

Step 1: Apply online

Check that you meet the admission requirements, then apply on the Wits website before the closing date. Use your names exactly as they appear on your ID or passport, without initials or nicknames. Wits treats each choice as a separate application.

Keep your options open. If you apply for two programmes in one competitive faculty, such as Health Sciences or Engineering, Wits advises adding one in a less restricted faculty, such as the Humanities, Commerce or Science. You must also complete your own application, because Wits does not deal with third-party agents.

Step 2: Pay the fee and upload documents

The R100 application fee must reach Wits before the closing date. Pay it through the self-service portal, under Campus Finances, or by EFT or deposit, using only your person number as the reference. Then upload your documents:

  • Current matrics: your final Grade 11 results
  • Applicants who have finished school: certified copies of your matric certificates
  • Applicants from other institutions: certified academic records from all tertiary registrations, even incomplete ones, and a certificate of good conduct

Some degrees need extra items, such as a portfolio, an essay, an audition or the National Benchmark Test. Wits considers your application incomplete until it receives every required document.

Step 3: Wits acknowledges your application

Wits emails you to confirm that it has received your application. The letter includes your person number, which becomes your student number, and the name of an admissions consultant for your queries.

Step 4: Track your application

Use the Wits student self-service portal to check your status, upload documents and keep your contact details up to date. Current matrics may receive a provisional offer based on their Grade 11 results, while firm offers come only after the final matric results.

Accepting an offer

If you receive a firm offer, accept it on the portal and complete the student contract before the cut-off date. You can accept only one offer. To change your choices, amend them on the portal rather than applying again. For help, call the Wits Student Call Centre on 011 717 1888. If Wits does not offer you a place in any of your choices, its website lists alternative options for school leavers.
