About Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursaries
The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF) Bursaries fund postgraduate research into Virology, at Honours, Master's, and PhD level, through the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation. Despite its historic name, the Foundation now supports a wide range of virology research beyond polio itself.
Because the bursary funds research rather than coursework, it explicitly excludes full-time salaried employees, who are considered to already have the financial means to fund their own studies.
Funding Details
Master's students receive up to two years of bursary support, and PhD students receive up to three years, with extensions considered only in exceptional circumstances.
Where You Can Study
Any South African university offering an accredited postgraduate Virology programme qualifies.

You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, registered for a postgraduate qualification - BSc Honours, MSc, or PhD - in Virology, with an overall average of at least 60% in your most recent studies. Full-time salaried employees do not qualify.
