Eligibility Requirements

  • Registered (or provisionally accepted) for an Honours, Master's or Doctoral qualification in a field relevant to Earth Observation, Space Engineering or Space Science
  • Minimum academic average of 65% in the most recent year of study
  • Able to submit a research proposal (2 pages for Master's, 4 pages for Doctoral) signed by both the applicant and supervisor

  • Certified copy of ID document (issued within the last 3 months)
  • Lecturer/supervisor testimonial (postgraduate applicants)

About Sansa Bursary

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) offers postgraduate bursaries to Honours, Master's and Doctoral students studying science and engineering fields relevant to the space sector, as part of efforts to grow South Africa's pool of space science and engineering skills in line with the National Development Plan. Bursaries are awarded annually and cover one year of study at a time.

Funding Details

  • Honours: R150,000 per annum
  • Master's: R160,000 per annum
  • Doctoral: R170,000 per annum

Bursaries are awarded for one year at a time and are renewable subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Where You Can Study

Open to postgraduate students registered at any accredited South African university in a qualification relevant to Earth Observation (e.g. remote sensing, GIS, environmental science, geoinformatics), Space Engineering (e.g. computer, electrical, mechanical or mechatronic engineering, IT) or Space Science (e.g. physics, applied mathematics, energy studies).
