Funding for music, drama, dance and film is smaller and more specialised than in other fields. It comes from arts foundations, cultural bodies, broadcasters and trusts, and many awards are based on an audition, portfolio or competition as well as your marks.
Because the number of awards is limited, applications from talented students can stand out when they are well prepared. Funders want to see not only skill but also commitment: regular practice, performances, productions and a clear idea of where you want to take your craft.
What funders usually ask for:
- An audition, recording, portfolio or showreel in the required format.
- Acceptance into a recognised music, drama, dance or film programme.
- References from a teacher, director or mentor.
- Sometimes proof of financial need.
Prepare your recordings or portfolio early and follow the submission rules exactly, since many awards reject entries that do not meet the technical requirements. Our guide to music and performing arts funding explains what to expect, and the general category lists awards open to any field.
